Robert Weaver drawings

“To fiction illustration the illustrator should bring the accuracy of journalism, to journalism the drama of fiction, and to editorial illustration the contradictions of reality.” So spoke American illustrator Robert Weaver one of the pioneers in the shift from neo-Rockwellian academicism to representational expressionism in illustration. Here’s an expressive example of his sketchbook work from the NY Times. Except generally in times of war it’s a shame ‘visual journalism’ never took off as extensively as it did with photography.

I would just love to see irish newspapers using irish illustrators in this way! Muc more interesting proposition than that ‘gallery’ of photos in the Irish Times redesign for a start.

I agree, but I think too many people just see this as “bad” drawing to take the risk. The same bumpkins who want designers to fill in all the white space. Still, it’s worth trying.
