manage your debts step-by-step

Illustrator Brian Fitzgerald is the latest IGI member to take us through a typical illustration process:
I had a illustration on personal debt to do for the Sunday Business Post. It was an open brief and I went for the sinking in debt approach with a variety of helping hands ready to hoist them out to a more manageable loan repayment. I might have been inspired by the recent Indiana Jones movie.

Sketch 1- Was a quick sketch to tease out the idea for me.

Sketch 2- I did a quick brush pen drawing from the pencil sketch to email to the client adding the euro bubbles in the quicksand. The client was happy with it and asked for the credit card a little larger.

Sketch 3- I used illustrator to work out the ovals and rearrange it to fit inside the dimensions.I used this print out as a guide for the final line drawing.

Sketch 4- I traced the image onto paper using pen and ink. I stretched the credit card arm higher to fill the space on the left side a bit better.

Sketch 5- The deadline was tight and I had to have it finished by the end of the day so I used illustrator. The euro symbol was added and the areas of colour were drawn in using the Wacom pen.

The final artwork. I didn’t like the look of the euro bubbles in sketch 5 so deleted the pen drawn euros and replaced them with a cleaner looking symbol to avoid confusion. It was printed in the 22nd of June 2008 issue of the Sunday Business Post, size 420mm by 360mm.
