A few new books I spotted that may be worth a purchase. How to Be an Illustrator by Darrel Rees gives a great overview of working as an illustrator from business advice to industry interviews and promotion tips. Sometimes I Think, Sometimes I Am is the latest book by Sara Fanelli in her inimitable style, and Hall of Best Knowledge is the new book by Ray Fenwick, hand lettering maestro extraordinaire.

ncad_2008.jpg
Here’s a sample of the abundant illustration work I spotted at the NCAD VisCom Graduates Show 2008. The show is open until June 15th so get along if you can, as well as to all the other graduate shows on at the moment. The DIT show also usually has plenty of illustration, so if you have any pics send them on.

Euro 2008

For all those finding it hard to get excited about the Euro 2008 Football Championships without Ireland to cheer for and England to mock, can find solace in the great illustrated/animiated opening titles for the BBC’s coverage. The titles are produced by Aardman Animation and are wonderful I think.

You can view them here and there is a great 5 min video on the making on them here.

In other football illustration news check out this great site for the book Football Heroes. Click on the right hand image and it turns the page. Some really great illustrations in here.

19th Sketchcrawl 2008

sketchcrawl
Mark your calendars! The next international SketchCrawl day is set for Saturday June 21st. This is something I’ve been talking about doing for a while, just talking. If there’s enough interest it wouldn’t take much to organise a Dublin event at the very least. Check out the forum, doesn’t seem to be an Irish thread yet.

Death Metal Art

death art
What would happen if your occasional schoolboy foray into the world of heavy metal art motifs never wained as you got older? well I guess you’d end up pretty darn good at it for a start. Pingmag has a post of Death Metal artists work and some of it is good stuff, in a Chapman Brothers kinda way.

A welcome addition to the World Wide Web is the new/first website by IGI member Brian Fitzgerald. A nice mix of Editorial and Book illustrations as well as a selection of sketchbook pages.
