Cliodhna Lyons talks to SCAMP about publishing a comic anthology to raise funds for Irish charity Goal.
“I’m sorry I can’t take your call right now but I’m saving the world” was the message my dad would leave on his Irish mobile when he went overseas to do aid work.  He had worked for a number of different groups over the years including the United Nations, Goal and the World Food Program.  He passed away suddenly while working in Sri Lanka. It was of natural causes but he hadn’t been sick nor shown any sign of illness.  He collapsed during a morning meeting and everyone thought he had just fainted, he never regained consciousness.

The Irish Times reports, a quartet of stamps featuring feline characters drawn by cartoonist Martyn Turner won the Stampilou Prize at the Grand Prix de L’Art Philatelique in Brussels on Saturday. The 55c and 78c stamps were issued by An Post last September and feature the artist’s interpretation of a Fat Cat , a Celtic Tigress , a couple of Cool Cats and, not surprisingly, a very satisfied Kilkenny Cat. McCloud’s chrome comic

chrome

Comics and web tech, could there be a better geek combo?  Well, maybe if they got the guys who made Portal to do a game version, or there was free pizza. But for now you can make do with Scott McCloud’s (the Edward Tufte of comics) version. Written originally as an internal print comic to explain google’s new Chrome browser, it does a great job of explaining complicated processes. Hopefully the navigation will get a reboot in the next build. See it here.

Scalder Step-by-Step

Scalder is one of the Illustrators Guild of Ireland members currently featured in the SLANT exhibition at the Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast. Here he gives an overview of the creation of his artwork ‘No Such Thing As Civil War’ for that exhibition:
The theme of the SLANT exhibition was ‘imitation : flattery or battery?’ and we were asked to pick an influential painting and somehow re-imagine it. I’ve always admired Salvador Dali, and chose Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War) (1936) as my source. I like Dali’s ideas more so than being influenced by any particular technical aspects of his work, so I had a nice sense of ambiguity as I got started. My intention was to use this painting as a compositional aid only, but as I worked on the piece, some synchronicities with the original painting began to emerge.

The Mighty Book of Boosh

For fans of the BBC cult surreal TV comedy show The Mighty Boosh (like me) comes the good news of their forthcoming release of a fully illustrated book. Apart from it’s funny scripts and great acting one of the most appealing aspect of the show is the overall design and look – from costume, sets, animation and illustration.
