24 hour comics day is an international celebration of comics creation. Cartoonists all over take the challenge of trying to create a 24 page comic story in 24 straight hours. This years event is the 18th/19th of October. There are two events taking place on the island of Ireland. The ROI event will take place as always in the Central Hotel in Dublin starting at noon on Saturday 18th and running for 24 hours until noon on Sunday 19th. It is free to take part, though artists must bring their own materials with them to create their comic. There will be a reading section featuring Irish mini comics and zines as well as a selection of international mini comics and a table selling mini comics. Catalyst Arts will be hosting a 24 hour comics event in Belfast starting at 10am on Saturday 18th and running until 10pm Sunday 19th. Again its free to take part but artists must bring their own materials. More information can be found at catalystarts.org.uk

Pentagram have designed Beat IV: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner; a fully illustrated edition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem, published by the Heart Agency to showcase the work of their roster of illustrators. See images here.

The National Ploughing Championships took place this year at Cuffesgrange, Co Kilkenny. Illustrator Roger O’Reilly took along his wellies and sketchbook to capture some of the spectacle of the event.
