Johnny Hicklenton on C4

Lazy-Atom on Creative Ireland writes: Anyone catch the documentary on Channel 4 on Tuesday night on the graphic artist Johnny Hicklenton, who has been filmed for the last 6 years suffering from degenerative (obviously) multiple sclerosis?
I was never a big fan of his artwork in 2000AD being honest, seeing as he turned Nemesis into some sort of drooping, slithery, dripping monster, but I’ll never forget one of his first appearances in the magazine, illustrating Grant Morrison’s “The Invisible Etchings Of Salvador Dali” which seared itself into my brain and left an indelible impression… and sometimes, not in a good way. But the artwork he has produced subsequently is unbelievable. a master horror visionary. epic, splendid and grotesque.
He admits that he was always a little bit disturbed and angry, and that contributed to his style, but since his diagnosis, his manifestation of the pain and suffering and anger in his work is… stark. And frightening. Very moving, in a deeply odd sort of way… And it is truly awful and sad to see someone (anyone) crippled by such a frightful disease.
limited editions of some of his prints are available to buy online. Finally I can buy an authentic Dredd (least scary piece. girlfriend would have a conniption if I opted for any of the other pieces… sigh.) by a certified 2000AD artist! yay…

Thanks Lazy-Atom
