wild02

There’s been several posts so far about the forthcoming Where the Wild Things Are movie here on Scamp and the excitement about the film is tangible. Apple have recently uploaded a lovely new featurette on their movies trailers section. It’s a great insight into the creator Maurice Sendak and his recent working relationship with director Spike Jonze. He points out that Spike is roughly the same age now as he was when he wrote the book. Check it out here and click one of the HD options if you have the time.

Mr. Browns History of Irish Comics

irishcomics

A rather interesting article from Irish Comics Wiki main contributor and cartoonist Patrick Brown on the history of Irish Comics. It’s only part 1 and charts its beginnings in mid 19th Century up to 1917.

“No doubt some would claim the carvings on some of the early Irish high crosses as comic strips, and some of the illuminations in medieval manuscripts (left) as cartooning, but that would probably be a little excessive. Let’s start with printed material. If we define “comics” in the McCloudian sense of images in sequence, excluding single-panel cartoons, we’d probably have to conclude that there are no true Irish comics or comics artists until the end of the 19th century.”

Looking forward to part 2!

odosketchOdosketch is an interesting flash drawing app and gallery that makes the process of drawing as much as the end result entertaining, as you can watch the sketches take shape in real time.

Illustration Boot Camp part duex

bootcamp-poster
Illustrators Ireland member Adrienne Geoghegan tells us about the next run of her illustration book camp for all visual artists.
A lot of artists are disgruntled about a lack of time for their personal projects and development. They want and need to get off their habitual thread-mill…. but how you ask? In this illustration boot-camp participants will take a leap into a lively and productive atmosphere with like-minded people. With a little encouragement, and some coercion, I, and (hopefully your colleagues!) will sway you into acting upon your ideas. If what you have to say is banal or washed out, you will hopefully become more discerning, and decide what you want to develop further. Understanding the importance of the creative process is not theoretical, but hugely personal and experiential. Making time to create new work beyond the commercial sphere can, and will, feed back into a more rewarding (and lucrative!) career. Course description: (more…)
