Erotic Rooms: a peepshow review

Here’s illustrator Mario Sughi’s review of the Peepshow exhibition that took place in MonsterTruck Gallery recently. The x-rated exhibition included work by Tim Biskup, Tara McPherson, Gaetan Billault, Jon Burgerman, Airside, Serge Seidlitz, Micheal Gillette and many Irish artists and designers.
“Erotic art is not an easy subject at all. For the artist himself it is quite easy to abandon prudence and to find oneself in tricky dangerous waters. On the other hand play it too cautiously and it will be equally easy to fall into gross banality and mortal boredom…..”
“…But tonight’s exhibition is a very successful one and the spectators seem thrilled by the joyful vision.

Artist: Steve Doogan
The major key to its success lies in the great precision of the works, precision in their execution, as well as in their minimalist elegance. The beautiful interlacing of colours flirts perfectly with the mysterious black and white of the more nocturnal works. Shadows and light penetrate the two gallery rooms and drag the curiosity of the viewers close to the walls again, right inside the frames where naked men and women are consuming all sorts of artistic orgies. And the precision and elegance have created a perfect atmosphere for tonight’s show: that is an atmosphere of pleasure.

Artist: Joven Kerekes
Let’s say that the main sensation is that all the artists involved in the Peepshow exhibition have largely enjoyed working with this theme, they have experimented successfully with compositions, classical and modern, and have played at length with irony and ambiguity.
There are surprises too, of course there are: some of the artists have managed to shock the public with some very playful, explosive and daring pieces of art: an art show, an erotic art show in particular, without some mental delirium wouldn’t be right. Of course.
So a very pleasant, colourful night and exhibition, in a professional and warm gallery, beneath the smiles of an amused and impressed crowd … After all the city of James Joyce and Harry Clarke knows even too well how liberating and energetic erotic art can be. ”
