Quentin Blake’s House of Illustration
Tuesday, April 20th, 2010
A bit late to this – but Quentin Blake needs your help. The legendary illustrator is hoping to open the House of Illustration by the end of 2012 – but needs to raise a whopping £6.5m to get the show on the road.
The House will be primarily for education – and not a home for collections of illustration – though there is a proposed dedicated exhibition area. The plans include space for talks and classes as well as a permanent display free to the public.
£65 million does sound like a lot but the majority of the dosh is ear marked for buying and renovating a building next to the new Central St Martins College of Art – as well as being bang in the middle of King’s Cross development with plenty of galleries, theatres and concert halls in works.

FAMILIAR
Friday, April 16th, 2010an exhibition of small-scale works from UNA GILDEA and PAUL MacCORMAIC
Opens Friday April 16, 6pm, at Unit H, The Market Studios
Una says: “The seed for ‘Familiar’ was sown about a year ago during a conversation with Paul about our respective work. Our common ground was a shared interest in private vs. public.
“In my work, I use a variety of media – acrylic paint, pen and ink, collage, animation.
For this exhibition I have returned to my passion for the portrait.
This new work is a series of portraits of family, friends and public figures.
The portraits are done using acrylic paint and pencil and are frank, intimate paintings of people I know and people I don’t know.
“There is an expressionistic quality to the work, rendered in a faux naïve style; the colours are bold and the pencil line is strong.
There is a vibrancy to the subjects as they engage with the viewer, looking and being looked at.”
Good luck with it Una

Alice on the ipad
Wednesday, April 14th, 2010It’s going to be interesting to see how kids books evolve to the new tablet technologies. Despite the frantic Alice video edit above, it could be very interesting indeed, perhaps with a bit more separation between the text and the imagery and interaction.
