Karen Nolan to launch book at Greenacres

IGI member Karen Nolan has written a book that has recently been seen on RTE 1’s Four Live show. It has been welcomed as ‘a long awaited publication’ by Brendan Grace and recounts the history behind the slogan that jump-started Gay Byrne’s career in the Irish media – ‘Anytime is Urney time’.

GUBU Comics

There is a black cloud over the country right now (what a massive understatement!) and it looks like people are finally getting angry at the performances of our so called leaders. Thankfully some people are channeling that anger into creative avenues such as cartoonist Alan Moloney. His series Wheel Spinning Hamster Dead is ripping round the interweb especially through his twitter account @wrathofkang. There is a massive appetite for home-based political cartooning at the moment so it’s great that, along with Martyn Turner, someone is filling that void.

Drawing Fashion Exhibition

Currently on show at London’s Design Museum, Drawing Fashion showcases fashion illustrators at their creative heights: Lepape at the beginning of the century, Gruau in the 40′s and 50′s, Antonio throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s, to current artists Mats Gustafson, Aurore de la Morinerie and Francois Berthoud. Film-clips, news reels, music and photography will sit alongside the original illustrations to reflect not only the spirit and the style of the decades but also the wider social and cultural changes of the century. The exhibition runs 03 November – 06 March 2011.

the lost art of pencil sharpening

So apparently we have all won some kind of 70 billion Euro Lotto or something. It was on the news so it must be true. Which comes just in time as we naturally all get our pencils sharpened by David Rees at Artisanal Pencil Sharpening for a mere $12 a pop and we’ve got quite a big invoice from him to pay off.

The 129th RUA’s Annual Exhibition opened to the public on Friday 15 October at the Ulster Museum. The exihibition closed on 14 November 2010, and this year’s exhibition featured the work of two IGI members, Brian Gallagher and PJ Lynch.

Movemeber Ad Campaign

With it being Movember, which is when November is given over to clean shaven men to grow a mustache to help raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer, this very clever ad campaign shows a series of famous faces with and without their tache. See them all here.
