An Open Art Show

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

SCAMP’s roving reporter, Mario Sughi, takes us on an open air art trail through Dublin City.
There are days when the option to visit a museum or an art gallery either is not there or is not the most appealing one. If the sun is out (as has been the case this February) and you opt rather for a walk on the streets of Dublin you could reinvent yourself as an open art reviewer, whose name could be Mr Magoo, and nobody would blame you. still life

rodge_setup.jpg
From Roger O’Reilly’s Rodgeblog
Here’s a simple still life set-up I came across years ago from a book by Arthur Stern called “How to see colour and paint it” for doing still life experiments (available on Amazon). It’s a three sided box made of plywood or better again foam core board. Make it whatever size you wish but preferably a size where you can easily get various coloured papers to clip onto all three sides (including white where you need it). What you get are great cast colours. Careful observation of for instance an orange or a coloured bottle will reveal subtle changes in cast colours as you move around the colour backing and the light. The anglepoise gives you a consistent light source. Just move it around to suit. Use a second one if you want.

History Ireland cover, step by step

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

brenb_history_01.jpgArtist John Conway talks us through the process involved in creating this atmospheric cover for History Ireland magazine. Take it away John…

After advertising history based posters in History Ireland the publisher, Nick Maxwell asked me to do illustrations for the front cover of his magazine. He had two problems with the front covers previously. Finding existing images that were striking and making sure they didn’t fight with the masthead of the mag. We decided on a trial period to see how it went, 4 issues (This one is the third issue so far and I am currently finishing the fourth).

Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein

Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein
Thanks to Mario for pointing this one out

For the last 25 years David Barsalou has examined over 30,000 comic books (a kind of obsession) to find the cartoon images Lichtenstein used in his work.
The Lichtenstein Project compares over 60 of Roy Lichtenstein’s paintings.
Though in art/history books I always read that Lichtenstein best-known artworks are relatively close, but not exact, copies of comic-book panels (a subject he largely abandoned in 1965) after Barsalou’s deconstruction I find quite amazing the level of similarities!!!

b gallagher rua
Yet more art-on-wall-stuff, bejaypers! IGI members Brian Gallagher (selfportrait above) and PJ Lynch have had their work selected for inclusion in the 126th Annual Royal Ulster Academy of Arts Exhibition.

The official opening is tonight, September 27th, and the RUA show will be held at The Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast.

It’s a familiar stomping ground for PJ, originally from that neck of the woods and a new detour for Brian, who hails from Yorkshire, via Donegal and has been based in Dublin for many years now.
The exhibition continues until the 24th October.

Ormeau Baths Gallery
18a Ormeau Avenue
Belfast
BT2 8HS

Exhibition opening hours
Tuesday – Saturday: 10.00am – 5.30pm
Sunday: 1.00pm – 5.00pm

Slinky Lad on the Green

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Slinky Lad

Passers by on St. Stephens Green currently have the opportunity to view a pleasantly surreal piece of sporting art by IGI member Kevin McSherry.

Slinky Lad is in the running in an upcoming sale of sporting art in Adam’s auction house, one of Ireland’s premier art auction houses. The sale, in association with Goffs, will take place on Tuesday, 23rd October and will also feature works of a more classical nature. My money’s on the slinky fellow though – it’s prominent place in the window display is attracting quite a bit of interest. Adam’s is at the junction of Kildare Street and Stephens Green, just by the recently re-opened Shelbourne Hotel. So perhaps a wee snifter in the Horseshoe Bar might be in order too!

Catching a Likeness: Portraits on Paper

Monday, September 24th, 2007

bonsignori_web.jpg

There’s a smashing exhibition running in the National Gallery of Ireland at the moment. Admission is free and it’s well worth a visit!

Catching a Likeness: Portraits on Paper includes a wide variety of drawings, watercolours, etchings etc. from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries. Idealised heads feature alongside robust interpretations, preparatory sketches, self-portraits and caricatures with modern portraits displaying a more experimental approach. It’s in the Print Gallery – which most regular visitors will know as the ‘low light’ rooms where the annual exhibit of Turner watercolours take place.
