Northlanders #45, an American comic book written by Brian Wood and published by DC/Vertigo, is out now with art by one of Ireland’s greatest comic book artists – Declan Shalvey. You can see more pages from the comic on his blog here.

Green Inking Seminar

This half-day seminar will take as its inspiration the increased visibility of graphic novels and comic books by Irish creators and/or concerning Irish themes. Chaired by children’s author and artist Oisín McGann, the event will take place at the Seminar Room in the National Library of Ireland 12th November, from 10am until 1pm. It includes a talk by Spanish graphic artist Luis Bustos, creator of Endurance, which chronicles Earnest Shackleton’s voyage. Admission is 5 euro.

I’ve been re-reading alot of classic comic strips lately which led me to the short video above but also to Phil Jupitus’s joyous celebration of Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes which originally aired on BBC Radio 4 but thankfully is now available to listen to here.

Vodafone commissioned five Irish artists from different disciplines to create unique artwork. The artists involved were Kilkenny graffiti artist Danleo, Dublin stylist Aisling Farinella, Waterford born illustrator Kathi Burke, photographer Steve Ryan from Kilkenny and Cork born Eoin Coeveny (above) who is a graphic illustrator.

IGI Member David McClelland show us today a therapeutical way of creating new work.

As a freelance illustrator I find I am vulnerable to comparing my work to ‘more successful’ illustrators’ work. This in turn can result in an opinion that I am failing in some way.

The truth is I could never be like Jillian Tamaki or Tomer Hanuka because I’m not Jillian Tamaki or Tomer Hanuka; I am David McClelland.

In realising this I drew the mini comic “function” which helped me get a grasp of how to appreciate who I am as an artist and which direction I should follow based upon who I am rather than what other people say I should be.

I hope it helps you as much as it has done for me.

through the looking glass exhibition

IGI member Chris Judge is taking part in a group illustration show titled ‘Through the Looking Glass’ that opens on the 17th of July in The Yeats Memorial Building in Sligo. You can see more of Chris’s work for this exhibition here. Also exhibiting are Daniel Bourke, James Gammell, Marian Noone, Patrick O’Callaghan and Wayne O’Connor.
