Tonight (Thursday 8th December), Hollywood Babylon, Dublin’s Midnight Movie Film Club, is hosting an exhibition of re-imagined movie posters at 6.30pm at Block T in Smithfield, Dublin. The strictly limited screenprinted versions of the posters from the movie nights are up for show and purchase including Philip Barrett’s version of the Crank 2 Poster above. It’s free in and there will be drinks, music, popcorn and fun.

California’s Gallery Nucleus “has invited more than 30 artists to pay homage to Jim Henson. This universally beloved visionary whose inspiring concepts and characters have impacted our culture in a monumental way. The collection will showcase a variety of mediums from a roster of professionals who are also genuine fans.” The Lovers, the Dreamers, and Me – A Jim Henson Tribute Exhibition opens on Dec 10th. The recent ‘Revolution’ Illustration at Fire Competition was the second disbursement of the Fire €150,000 Arts Fund. Following judging and determination of the ten finalists, The Copper House Gallery will be exhibiting the short-listed and winning illustrations. The overall winner and runners-up will be announced on the night of the exhibition launch.
The ten ‘Revolution’ finalists are Sharon Bruton, Derry Dillon, Jennifer Farley, and Illustrators Ireland members Brian Gallagher, Matthew Griffin, Kevin McSherry, Padhraig Nolan, Steve Simpson, Mario Sughi and Donough O’Malley.

On the judging panel for the ‘Revolution’ Illustration at Fire Competition were Art Director at Ogilvy & Mather Laurence O’Byrne, The Small Print’s Bren Byrne and The Copper House Gallery Curator Leszek Wolnik. The ten finalists were announced on Friday 18th November 2011.
The ten finalists will each receive a prize of Fine Art Printing Services to the value of €1,000, and the overall winner will receive an eight week residency in Fire incorporating a solo exhibition in The Copper House Gallery. The winner also receives mentoring as well as exhibition prints and limited edition prints to the value of €8,000.
Admission is free to this event and all are welcome.

With Halloween only a month away, Laurie Lipton’s The Carnival of Death show at Last Rites caught my eye.

The scraperboard process Brian practices is the reverse from usual mark making. Each scraperboard on show is a unique one off original

He begins with a black board and gradually remove parts of it’s thin dark surface to reveal the white china clay beneath.
He is very interested in the clean crisp line that this technique affords and the way the drawing can seem to oscillate.
Being restricted to black and white makes the artist choose certain elements and reject others in order to get an essence of the chosen image being depicted.

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan T.D. will officially open the gallery and will launch the first element of the Arts Awards – a competition for illustrators.

Opening show is  next 27th September 2011 with an exhibition of work by members of the Illustrators Guild of Ireland.

Dublin artist Loreana Rushe launches her first solo exhibition next Thursday 4th August 6-8pm in the R.A.G.E, Fade Street. The exhibition will run daily until Saturday August 13th and will display her work for bands like Fight Like Apes and Adebisi Shank as well as editorial illustrations for the likes of Le Cool and Punt Magazine.  It will also include her collaborative photo work with renowned artist Gary Baseman and a small selection of photography. There will be drinks and sweets served at the opening and prints for sale.

IGI member Chris Judge is taking part in a group illustration show titled ‘Through the Looking Glass’ that opens on the 17th of July in The Yeats Memorial Building in Sligo. You can see more of Chris’s work for this exhibition here. Also exhibiting are Daniel Bourke, James Gammell, Marian Noone, Patrick O’Callaghan and Wayne O’Connor.

Paper cut works from four Henri Matisse illustrated art books are currently on show in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, until 25th September.
