It took two generations to reach the rocket age from Man’s first powered flight.
It took me three days. Here’s how, but first settle yourself in, make sure that your seat-belt is buckled and switch on your reading light. Enjoy the flight. The editor of the Irish Times Innovation Magazine called with a request for an image that would convey how businesses can learn from past failures. As usual, I sent in a few suggestions by email, sketched quickly with just enough information to show the thrust of what I thought would work for them… (more…)

Look and Learn back in business

25 years after it disappeared off the newsagent’s shelves, Look and Learn, the children’s illustrated magazine is back in business as a subscription only publication. Look and Learn was a general knowledge magazine that due to its patronage of the very best of late 20th century British illustrators and its grown-up writing style appealed to adults as much as to kids.

A limited edition minizine is being produced by the CANDY COLLECTIVE for the UltraShock event in Dublin’s POD on Sunday 5th August. The theme is ‘What does music mean to you?” and features art by Aidan Kelly, Al Kennigton, Asbestos, Alan Clarke, BRENB, Brian Coldrick, Build, Donal Thornton, Jon Averill,  Jon Burgerman, Mark Blamire (Blanka), Oliver Jeffers, Richard Seabrooke, Wes Trumble.

There have been a few interesting articles recently that have focused on the design of the New Yorker magazine, both praising and critiquing its consistency, and mainly taking issue with the inside of the magazine, but what is taken as a given by both is the very central role illustration has in that design, particularly in its striking covers. Made all the more striking of course as today there is so little use of illustration so central to a magazine’s brand image…
