Linotype: the film is a new documentary about the Linotype typecasting machine. Culture File on RTÉ Lyric fm has an interesting interview with the film’s director, Doug Wilson, who calls the machine “the Twitter of 1886.” You can listen to the podcast here.

the stripe

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

As it states in its first issue, The Stripe is a new Dublin freesheet that offers “the inside track on what gig to hit when you’re trying to fake hipness to impress a date.”  I haven’t laughed so much in a long time reading it. Above  is Illustrators Ireland member Steve McCarthy creating the cover for the current issue (finished cover below). It comes out every two weeks with issue 2 out this Thursday. A Gentleman of Letters

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

feeney_2The family of Dublin signwriter Kevin Freeney (1919-1986) have recently posted a fascinating collection of photographs of his work. Check them out on Flickr here.

“Signwriting goes back at least three generations in his family. Back in the 1930′s he rambled through Dublin’s streets on a bike or with a pushcart carrying his paints and brushes. In that period the city’s streetscapes were elegantly embroidered with handwritten shop and pub fascias. Having done ‘at least 700 pubs and shopfronts’ in Dublin, the most famed streets -O’Connell, Henry, Grafton, and Capel- all carried his personalised three-dimensional relief lettering and ornamentation. His fellow craftsmen hailed him as a “Master” - Dublin Street Life & Lore by Kevin C. Kearns.

Candy @ Garden party – Or how we didn’t die!

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

candy_garden_02.jpg

It was an extremely hot day on Sat June 9th (too hot to draw if the truth be told). But the art must go on, so we managed to produce two walls of doodles. We had such a fantastic spot in a beautiful walled garden – a hidden gem surrounded by the chaos that was a very loud dance music festival. There seemed to be a genuine interest by the festival goers in what we were doing once they understood that they weren’t allowed to participate (at least until after we melted!) and it went down a treat. Participating artists were Oliver Jeffers, Chris Judge, BRENB, The Tender Trio & Alan Clarke.
